Ozzfest 2008 news

3:51 PM Fri, May 09, 2008 |
Mike Daniel   E-mail   News tips

Last year, info for Ozzfest 2007 was announced in early March. It's now May, and there's been nothing official regarding Ozzfest 2008. Until now ... and that news is eye-opening for North Texas.

This is what I've had confirmed by AEG Live, which is promoting this year's Ozzfest: It will be at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco. That's it. This is unofficial info that I've had corroborated by several other sources: PHP will probably be Ozzfest's only U.S. location (that's right; It's pulling a Lollapalooza). It will be a two-day event on Aug. 9-10. Ozzy will headline the Aug. 10 date, and one of the globe's most popular and controversial metal (that's a hint, folks) bands will headline on Aug. 9 (c'mon, think: what band is releasing an album in September?).

Yeah. Wow is right.

Bad news for Emilio

8:32 PM Thu, May 08, 2008 |
Joy Tipping   E-mail   News tips

The Associated Press is reporting that Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit for driving when he crashed his tour bus on a freeway, according to a police report released Thursday.

No charges have been filed against the singer, known to his fans as Emilio, but a police report states that prosecutors believe the March 23 accident in suburban Houston warrants a charge of driving while intoxicated.

The 45-year-old Grammy-winning singer was severely injured in the crash and is still recovering at a Houston rehabilitation center. Several other band members came away with less serious injuries.

My Morning Jacket announced its summer tour, which will begin June 20 at New York's Radio City Music Hall and come to Dallas and the Palladium Ballroom on Aug. 23. Frontman Jim James says the band will work in plenty of new material in the shows, most of which will be in "an evening with" format.

The band is scheduled to be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on May 10.

What the ...? Indie bands rock Mother's Day

12:52 PM Thu, May 08, 2008 |
Dawn Burkes   E-mail   News tips

I admit that I wonder what some of the mothers of band members are thinking when you hear some of the "scandalous" band names (Holy [Expletive]) and/or song titles ("News From Your Bed") that come from indie rock bands?

Well, just in time for Mother's Day, emusic.com talked with some of those mothers about what their favorite songs are from their child's band. My favorite is the mother (of JB Townsend of the Crystal Stilts) who admits she still "can't understand what Brad is singing," even after several listens. Read all about it here.

Popalicious tours: Madonna, American Idol

11:56 AM Thu, May 08, 2008 |
Christy Robinson   E-mail   News tips

Two new tours worthy of note ...

Madonna's newly announced itinerary includes Houston on Nov. 16, the closest to Dallas the tour will get. The American Idol tour, featuring the show's top finalists, will swing through American Airlines Center on Aug. 25 (tickets for that show go on sale May 17), and it'll be in Houston the day before.

My favorite part: the names. Madonna's is "The Sticky and Sweet Tour" in support of her new release, Hard Candy. I can't decide if that's clever or disgusting. And the American Idol tour is sponsored by — get this — Pop Tarts. HAHAHA! I think the pastry folks hitched onto last year's tour, too, but the affiliation still makes my day. Click below to get a lil more info on both tours.

D'Angelo's back! (Swoon ...)

3:47 PM Wed, May 07, 2008 |
Dawn Burkes   E-mail   News tips

I've always said that marketers missed a prime opportunity when they didn't package D'Angelo's single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," with a DVD of the song's video. I guess putting my fondest wish out into the ether wasn't a bad thing to do, because now I get an announcement that The Best So Far ..., a compilation of the soul singer's top hits and videos, will be released on June 24.

There are 17 audio tracks and seven previously unreleased music videos on So Far. Also debuting on that date is a 15-track digital album and four video downloads, as well as four "ringtunes," according to a press release. I'm more than pleased to hear that D's back in the studio, writing and recording a new release. About time. Can't get enough (giggle ... like me)? Make good, good friends with him here and, have mercy, here.

Beck's new CD

Dawn Burkes   E-mail   News tips

Ready? It turns out Beck is releasing a new CD this summer; no one knows exactly when, though. Scuttlebut has it that it could appear at any time. I'm hoping that this time next year we won't be saying, "Where it's at?"

The still-untitled album contains 10 still-untitled tracks and is co-produced by Danger Mouse. Beck will play the Austin City Limits Music Festival, which is being held Sept. 26-28 at Zilker Park in Austin.

Dallas has its share of great local jazz musicians, but it's not exactly a must-play town for national touring acts. Yet every now and then, we do get to hear some of New York's finest --- like tonight's Wycliffe Gordon concert at Sammons Jazz. Check out the details here.

Mario Tarradell   E-mail   News tips

That's right, folks. Jorge Villamizar, the former lead singer of lauded, award-winning Latin pop group Bacilos, has crafted an excellent debut solo CD. The self-titled project, which arrives in stores May 20, is full of adult songs with catchy choruses and organic musicianship. You can listen to the disc's first single, "Ninguna," through his website. Also, check out my interview story with Mr. Villamizar, which should run on the cover of GuideLive May 21.

50 is the new black

1:50 PM Tue, May 06, 2008 |
Dawn Burkes   E-mail   News tips

Random thought: Prince, Madonna and Michael Jackson all turn 50 this year. Shouldn't newspapers, magazines, record labels, somebody be planning some sort of, well, something?!

Think about it. Each one has moved so many mountains, and not just musically. Prince enlightened the public and other artists about the dangers of a lot of the high-dollar record deals, not to mention teaching everyone that his name is Prince (then TAFKAP), and he is funky. Madonna ushered in a new era of female pop superstar, showing everyone how to change with the times and remain relevant (I know, I know ... discuss on your own). Michael, well, whatever you think of the King of Pop now, he revolutionized music, dance, videos, etc. Where is the love?!

Roger Waters fans: "Comfortably Numb"?

11:11 AM Mon, May 05, 2008 |
Thor Christensen   E-mail   News tips

Reader Jennifer took umbrage with my suggestion that maybe a few of the fans at Roger Waters' show Friday were a little, um, baked :

"It sounds to me like you didn't really do much checking with the fans. I went with a friend and my boyfriend and I'd like you to know we are not "stoners". In fact the only thing we did there was have a couple beers. i have seen quite a few concerts and it was in fact one of the most calm and collected audience that I have ever witnessed at a concert. The people were very polite and well behaved."

I agree the crowd was pretty mellow. I'm told marijuana has that effect on some people.

A3C Hip-Hop Festival aftermath

6:17 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 |
Dawn Burkes   E-mail   News tips

The A3C Hip-Hop Festival, held March 20-22 in Atlanta, hosted the reunion of the Juice Crew. For those of you who don't know, that would be (insert the word legendary in front of each name): Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Marley Marl, Craig G, MC Shan and Roxanne Shante. The Oscar-winning (it's still hard to believe) Three 6 Mafia, Del the Funky Homosapien, DJ Lord and one of my favorite Atlanta groups, Collective Efforts, were also at the festival, which celebrated its fourth year of revelry.

There were panels such as "Women in Hip-Hop III: Love & Money," b-boy competitions and a producer competition. Catch up to the fun with words, pictures and video.

Jazzman Chuck Mangione should "hang it up," writes a reader

2:19 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 |
Mario Tarradell   E-mail   News tips

Kenneth J. Metevier of Lewisville trekked out to see jazz flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione in concert last night at Bass Hall in Fort Worth. And boy was he disappointed. We'll let him say it best:

"Chuck Mangione is an icon as it relates to jazz music and performances. I was extremely excited to see him and was not overly concerned that the price of a ticket was $100.00 each. That said, the concert was a total mess. I think age has caught up with him and am not sure what the reason is for him to be touring the country, charging what he is, for the product he put on stage. ... Last night...he was nothing more than a back-up to his sax/flute/and piccolo player, his guitarist and other 2 members of his band. Most of the time he sat on a chair in front of his keyboard and moved around. ...There are times when people should just hang it up because they just don't have it anymore. This was most definitely the case for Chuck Mangione."

A bit of good news, though. Mr. Metevier was pleasantly surprised by Dianne Reeves, Mr. Mangione's opening act. "She has an incredible talent accompanied with a strong, bold and versatile voice," he writes. So true! Ms. Reeves was wonderful during her late March gig at McFarlin Auditorium. Her new CD, When You Know, is exquisite.
