Your player advice, please

My mp3 player is invaluable to me while I work out, but I really need a new one. My Samsung Nexus 50 with XM capabilities has served me well over the past year and a half. But it's a piece of technology that works better on paper than in reality — the XM only functions when the player's sitting in its craddle, so away from home, it's just a run-of-the-mill player. Recommendations? I'm looking for something workout-friendly. Just please, no iPhone ($); I work at a newspaper. And if you reccommend a particular iPod, please say why. I've resisted the i-cult up to now, but I'm willing to sip the Kool-Aid with an effective argument.

Christy: Is XM (or Sirius) an absolute necessity? Most mp3 players have built-in FM tuners these days. An exception to that (and a reason why most small digital music players have FM tuners; it helps them compete) is the iPod. I recently succumbed to the Apple cult (I have both a new iPod Classic and a 3G nano), but I was happy with Digitalway's MPIO players (I have an FL100) before that. They're hard to find in the U.S., but are worth it in terms of build quality, design, sound quality and useful features.

iPod Shuffle = cheap, lightweight, and it requires you to actually pay attention to what's in your library. Sometimes I find stuff in my video iPod that I can't even remember downloading.
