Oh, there's plenty of love for Carrie 'round these parts. Like I said to Mario earlier today: "Never underestimate the power of a generically cute and buttoned up (and thus unattainable) female as an all-powerful sex symbol in conservative American culture." Shania Twain, anyone? Yes, the same Shania who's said that she hated sex (no wonder she married Robert "Mutt" Lange)? Yeah-huh. Unattainable is sexy.
Not to get all political on a music blog, but here's another example: conservative pundit Ann Coulter.

Ew! Ann Coulter is *not* cute! But your point is dead-on. Unfortunately.

Backup vocalist? My Faith Hill impression: "WHATTTT?"
Goodness, if Carrie Underwood was a backup vocalist, who the heck would be left who could actually sing?

Wow, you must be listening to the CD with your head under water or something, because the girl can out sing any country singer out there and look good doing it. If she's a back up singer than Faith Hill (who can't sing live, btw) must be the back up singer to the back up singer, cause Underwood makes her look like yesterdays news. Underwood is awesome! (Now I really know why I don't like critics....)

Here's an example of more media hype --- Carrie is highly talented and her success reflects that. What's the writer's credentials anyway ????

So you don't like Carrie? MILLIONS of others do :)

Carrie Underwhelm brings on the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's for me. Boring, souless and completely average.

After the great success of her first album, I'm not sure how someone could just now call her a background vocalist. If that was true, I don't believe her first album would have done so well. Look at Taylor Hicks...he was an idol winner, but his albums have not sold like hers. Not to mention all the awards she's won. She's a great artist and I think she's proved herself to be more than a background vocalist.

Well, you hae to be a less than average person to write what you wrote in your column. Wait until she has the number one album of the year then maybe you will realize that she really has talent!

I think your article is a bunch of air! Carrie has amazing vocals and this album is awesome. Either you don't like country music or you don't know what a great singer sounds like!

I totally disagree with your review of Carnival Ride. Carrie is an awesome singer! This is one of the best country albums to come along in a long time. Every song on this album is wonderful. I think her remake of Randy Travis' "I Told You So" is amazing. I really like Vince Gill singing backup for Carrie.

If you think that Carrie, the girl with the golden voice, is on par with a backup singer, you would be sadly mistaken. Her pure and bright tone and raw power in her voice are mesmerizing and gorgeous, but she can also craft subtle beauties such as "Wheel of the World" where she displays the softer side of her voice. Not only is her voice amazing, so is her good-girl image and personality. She is the anti-Paris, and thank God for that!

Carrie Underwood's new CD is awesome. Calling her a background singer is simply ridiculous. She has a real talent, a genuine heart and a real soul. There are not many singers in country music like her. If she is so bad, then why is she the #1 female artist in country music? Think about it.

Your the one full of hot air. This girl has talent, she is down to earth and stays out of the tabloids and bars. She deserves more recognition for not letting immediate success go to her head like a lot of other stars out there.

Carrie Underwood's album is great. I am a hard sell...I don't normally run out and buy albums, but I heard some of the tracks before its release, so when it went on sale I ran as fast as I could to get it. It DOES NOT disappoint. And I don't know if the author is clueless or just really bitter and jaded, but it sounds more like a personal attack than an actual review.

Carrie Underwood is first and foremost a great singer! Full stop. Period.
She has that undefinable quality in her live singing voice, that I can only describe as real SOUL. She sings it and WE feel it. As an appreciative broad music fan and not previously anything 'Country' (Shelby Lynne - 'This Is Shelby Lynne' aside)this is something fresh. The fact that it's Country is a mute point.
Put another way...she's punching way above her weight. After all she has been singing in Church since the tender age of three...
