Is Erykah about to lose her US hip-hop credentials? (Kevork Djansezian) The entry "Dallas' Erykah Badu says she identifies with Palestinian hip-hop" has no entry tags. Been awhile, folks ... I've been on vacation, boozing it up in London Town for the past couple of weeks (it's the land of the $17 pint these days, so I didn't have all that many). I'm still trying to get terms such as "punter," "lift" and "mind the gap" outta my lexicon ... and this helps: The venerable summer metal tour Ozzfest will finally have serious competition this year from The Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, which will hit 30 North American cities in July and August. Co-founded by the same gents that brought us the punk-a-rific Warped Tour and the screamo-tastic Taste of Chaos tour (and with solid Live Nation backing), the Mayhem Festival should be an immediate sucess. Why? Its dual headliners are two of best-selling heavy rock acts of the last decade: Slipknot and Disturbed. Two mind- and finger-blowing bands, Great Britain's Dragonforce (Bloody brilliant! Oops ... I digressed there, didn't I?) and Georgia-based critical darling Mastodon, are its primary support, and two side stages will feature performances by Sevendust, Machine Head, 36 Crazyfists and seven others. Specific cities and dates haven't been determined. So what are the chances that Mayhem will hit Dallas? I'd call it about 50-50 right now. Yes, another name change for the outdoor concert venue. Coca-Cola Starplex/Starplex/Smirnoff Music Centre is now named after the listings search engine. Check out Thor's story here. Earlier I posted a blurb that went something like: Tony Romo sang "Don't Stop Believing" onstage Monday night with parody band Metal Skool at Key Club in L.A. The YouTube link that I provided for your viewing pleasure wasn't the right one (thanks C for the heads-up). Ends up Tony Romo sang the same song with the same band at the Palladium last summer, and that's the video I posted, whoopsie. But wait, the plot thickens. Undermain Theatre's production of Greendale will include some familiar faces from the local music scene. Look for Kenny Withrow of New Bohemians on guitar, Paul Semrad from Course of Empire on bass and Alan Emert of Brave Combo on drums. Remember that new segment dubbed "My Grammy Moment" at last year's Grammy Awards, where unknowns vied for the chance to perform live with Justin Timberlake? (Houston native Robyn Troup won, btw). The second annual "MGM" features instrumentalists competing for a chance to play with the Foo Fighters at this year's show, airing Sunday, Feb. 10, on CBS. Get your vote on here. Then tell us who you think should end up playing with FF at the Grammys. Competitors had to send in video of themselves performing FF's "The Pretender." January 28, 2008Erykah Badu just released one of the more surreal videos we've seen in recent memory, "Honey'': As the camera floats around a vinyl record store, the singer comes alive on the cover of a dozen LPs, from Funkadelic's Maggot Brain to the Beatles' Let It Be. Later in the clip, a small army of Erykahs perform the song onstage ala "Hey Ya!'' the Outkast video featuring her ex-beau Andre 3000. You can watch the "Honey" video here. David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen on the same stage together? And what about Eddie's 16-year-old son as bass player? (I said drummer before geez, a slip of the keys, people!) We want to know if Saturday night's concert had you Dancing in the Streets! Hot for Teacher! If it was the Best of Both Worlds! If it made you wanna Jump! But if Jamie's Cryin' (this is so fun!) because she didn't get to see the show, tell her not to. Van Halen's coming back to the AAC in March for a second concert. LCD Soundsystem’s dance-minded CD Sound of Silver was the surprise poll-topper in the Village Voice’s “Pazz & Jop” tally of more than 500 music critics. It’s one of the few times an electronic-oriented album was voted the year’s best (Moby’s Play was No. 1 in 1999). Kanye West – a two-time poll-topper – came in No. 6 with Graduation. Also in the Top 10: Spoon, M.I.A. and Arcade Fire. Dallas’ St. Vincent was a respectable No. 91 for her debut Marry Me. See the whole list here. Here's her story and interview. Stephanie Mills is not your average R&B diva. Performing since the age of 9, she first appeared on Broadway in the musical Maggie Flynn, but will forever be associated with her depiction of Dorothy in The Wiz, the African-American adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, and her signature, soul-shattering version of its closing number, "Home.” In addition to recording with the Peabo Bryson, Teddy Pendergrass and Robert Brookins, Ms. Mills' buoyant, bubbly soprano has anchored hits like “I’ve Learned to Respect the Power Of Love," "I Feel Good All Over," “(You’re Puttin’) A Rush on Me” and “Never Knew Love Like This Before,” to name a few. Appearing in Dallas tonight with the Whispers and After 7, the 50-year-old soul survivor, now based out of Charlotte, N.C., chatted by phone recently about her latest projects, why she gets choked up over Britney Spears and the most significant role that she’s ever played (hint, it’s out of the glare of the spotlight).
