April 9, 2008I just got the Roots' newest CD, scheduled to come out April 29 on Def Jam. The CD, called Rising Down, caught me off guard because it came in a plain white envelope with a handwritten return address. I almost put it to the side to look at later, but the press release said "The Roots Get Political on Rising Down." Of course, then I said, "Hmmm..." And then, the best part of all, the CD is in one of those plain CD cases that you can buy in bulk at Office Depot (or Target or Wal-Mart, you get the picture). Handwritten (again!) on the CD-R is the name of the group and the name of the CD. As a colleague of mine said, "What? Did ?estlove burn the CD himself?" This is why I love that group. No pretentions, no bells and whistles, just good hip-hop with a twist. I'm already in love with the CD and haven't even started listening yet. I'll let you know my favorite tracks soonest.
