(Wikipedia.org)

Soul Train creator Don Cornelius is teaming up with Warner Bros. to make a movie based on the urban dance show, which lasted from 1971-2006. It's expected to come out next year.

A synopsis: "The project revolves around two male dancers on the show who get into 'a lot of good stuff and some bad stuff as well,' said Cornelius, who will serve as a producer. It features 'lots of music, lots of comedy,' as well as 'a little bit of violence.' He also promised it would be 'more than slightly sensual.'"

National Record Store Day ain't all this week's that

Christy: Good Records' gigantic National Record Store Day shindig isn't the only notable local-music celebration happening soon. In fact, the next week has at least a couple additional more-than-worthy events.

Mike Biggs' ambitious Mokah M2S2 local-music showcase and symposium is on Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m.; a week ago, he moved the event from April 19 so as to not compete with Good Records' festivities. And that's OK, since a bit of the same talent will be present at M2S2. The lineup at Mokah won't be quite as broad or as far-ranging, but it's still durned fine: Jayson Bales, Salim Nourallah, the Slack, Rahim Quazi, Bridges and Blinking Lights and more, with open-mike sessions hosted by Jenny Nabb and ad-hoc issue-moderated discussions between music sets by A Fine Line blogger Cindy Chaffin (she's baa-aack!). Tickets are $7, and partial proceeds benefit the Carter Albrecht Foundation.

Then on Thursday, it's sister publication Quick's Big Thing awards show and concert at the Palladium Ballroom, headlined by Polyphonic Spree and featuring a slew of top Dallas-area pop and rock music talent. Admission's free, though tickets are required; fine out where to get 'em here. You'll be glad you did. Really, you will.

Last night's Nick Lowe and Ron Sexsmith show at Sons of Hermann Hall

Check out this mini-review by Joyce Saenz Harris, staff writer for our Taste section, about the Nick Lowe show last night ...

Just got back from one of the best concerts I've ever seen: Nick Lowe at Sons of Hermann, with Ron Sexsmith opening. It was not publicized in the DMN as one of the must-see concerts of this week. But a loyal crowd of fans turned out anyway, and were rewarded with great, generous sets from both musicians — including a soulful, beautifully harmonized duet near the end of the night, on "My Baby's Gone." Each of them sang and played guitar solo, with no backup.

Cat Power's show Saturday at the Palladium Ballroom is a no-go: "She hurt her vocal chords,'' says her New York-based publicist Catherine Herrick. "I'm waiting for more details." Ms. Herrick said the show will be rescheduled, but there's no date yet. Cat Power also cancelled her show Friday in Tempe, Arizona.
