Chopping it up with Mathew Knowles....

I don't know why I was surprised, but it did throw me a minute to see Mathew Knowles (owner of Music World Entertainment, creator of Destiny's Child and father/manager to Beyonce and Solange) behind the soundboard before his youngest daughter, Solange, took the stage as the opening act for Chrisette Michele and Raheem DeVaughn on Wed. night.

Given Beyonce's cagey outlook on the media, I was impressed with how personable he was; excited about seeing her show for the first time, Mr. Knowles explained her qualifications in getting this far:

... her songwriting skills (she wrote Michelle Williams' latest single, "We Break the Dawn," as well as co-writing "Get Me Bodied" and "Upgrade U" for Beyonce's B'Day), classical dance and vocal training since the age of 6, as well as covering for Kelly Rowland after she broke her toe during a tour with Christina Aguilera. As for her second solo album, SoL-Angel & The Hadley Street Dreams, Beyonce doesn't make an appearance, but quite a few other hitmakers do, including Raphael Saadiq, Q-Tip and even Motown legend Lamont Dozier. "She calls it 'soul pop,' " Daddy Knowles said proudly of his daughter's Aug. 26 musical foray. "It's very eclectic and she's going to surprise people with this one."
