Reader Jon thinks so. He agreed with my overall review of the Black Crowes' show Saturday, but thought I was too kind to Chris Robinson: "I too enjoyed the show," Jon writes, "But Chris Robinson's 'oversinging' is what keeps them from being a truly great band for me. He's like the Mariah Carey of southern rock...when every line is sung at an emotional intensity of "10" it loses the ability to touch you on a human level. if he could get a handle on dynamics and rachet it up to hit the highlights of the song the Crowes would be 10x more powerful." |

Whoever wrote "Is Chris Robinson "The Mariah Carey of Southern Rock"? apparently is not familiar with where The Crowes' inspiration originated. Like all working/touring/performing artists', after playing "Black Moon Creeping" for the 1000th time...the voice begins to attack the melodies a bit different. It's the "Folk" side of Blues. Muddy did it, Otis did it, Stevie does it and so does Chris ! Throught the years our voice fluctuates and reconciles and if your one of the greats ones it becomes your advantage. Chris may lose his muse from time to time but comparing him to Mariah is like comparing apples to oranges.

Reader Jon doesn't know what he's talking about. A Southern Rock band? Are you serious? I've seen the Crowes six times and have never seen one Confederate flag or Dale Jr. shirt. Talk about short-changing the Crowes' wide musical influences and range.

Mariah can't touch you on a human level? what the hell does that mean? her music touches people on every level, in fact, i think her music is the most inspirational of all, have u listened to her sing 'Bye Bye', it's touching, and it connects to people all over the world.
