Have you seen ZZ Top in the D-FW?

zztop4.jpgThor's written a story about how some people forget that two-thirds of the Houston-formed band ZZ Top are actually from the Dallas area, born and raised (find the story online here late Sunday night/early Monday, or in the Sunday paper). Dusty Hill and Frank Beard are pretty proud of their Dallas roots and have played at all sorts of venues in the area — the big ones, the legendary ones that aren't around anymore, the sketchy underground ones.

Have you ever seen the band play in the area? Tell us where, when and how it went. If you haven't, what's their best album or song?

Cotton Bowl October 31, 1981. Opened for The Rolling Stones. I thought they were a lot better than The Stones that night. Most people left during the Rolling Stones because of a huge downpour.

I saw them close at Crossroads in June 2004.
but ZZ has that way of bringing down the house. had to leave early when storms and lightning started moving in .

Growing up, my dad would tell stories about hanging out with Dusty and Frank in Fair Park. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School as well and knew Dusty. We would drive down Grand Avenue and he would point out the buildings where they would go and hang out. Being a teenager in the 80's and early 90's, it was cool that my dad actually knew these guys!!

I've seen ZZ Top twice. The first time was on February 13, 2000 at the Fort Worth Convention Center with Lynyrd Skynyrd, & that was an awesome show. The second time for ZZ was at the Crossroads Guitar Festival, which is probably the ultimate concert that I've seen. Seeing, ZZ, Clapton, Santana, BB King, Buddy Guy, Joe Walsh, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Jeff Beck, & Vince Gill & othere together was really magical.

Reader Ray Radcliff sent along these ZZ memories: "What a surprise to read your column about ZZ today. I was at their show in Ft Worth the night they got a visit from a completely naked fan that came out from behind the stage. And I was there in the rain on 10/31/80 when they opened for the Stones. Just a couple of years ago I saw them in Houston when Governor Rick Perry came on and played drums for a song or two. (?) And back 5 or 6 years ago I was staying at the W in NYC when Billy Gibbons, alone, walked by me while I was waiting for a cab. I yelled, "Hey Billy, I'm from Dallas and I bought Antenna! " And he came over and shook my hand and said thanks. I had my camera with me and said "will you take a pic with me".....He thought for a minute and ever the business man finally said "Okay, but it will cost you a dollar". I said "I'll pay it" flipped my camera to a buddy and got the pic. He shook my hand again and off he want to the SNL show that featured Kid Rock.....Crazy how all this stuff happens but it's why my generation will always go to see concerts.....

PS: he didn't make me pay the buck......"

I saw the Worldwide Texas Tour in 1976, They had buzzards and a steer onstage, pretty outrageous for that time. Saw them again New Years
Eve 1977, Aerosmith was the opener and they were drugged up beyond belief.
I was at the Crossroads show and hated that ZZ Top was the closer, should have been Jeff Beck w/Clapton doing a full set. Was glad the skys opened up and they had to end it early.

I saw them in 72 or so at the arts theatre at North Texas, now UNT. It was a great show. I was in High school and took my girl friend now my wife. She has a letter that she sent to her sister saying we went to a concert and saw some band named ZZ Top. It is quite a keepsake.

1971 or 72 in the National Guard Armory in Jacksonville, Texas. They were in Tyler recording their 2nd album or something at Robin Hood studios. Midway they blew out the electrical breaker and it took a minute to get it reset. By far the best of my 3 or 4 times to see them play. The next time they were in Tyler to record an album they played a concert at Tyler Junior College with Freddie King. Also, very good stuff.

i just wish i get a chance to see this band before i go.

I was the lead singer in The Other Group,we were the band that the Hill brothers convinced Frank to quit to join them and found the American Blues. The rest of the band was Steve Spence on rythm,James Adams on bass my brother David Pool on lead guitar and myself on lead vocals. We all missed having Frank when he left, but things turned out pretty well for him I would have to say.
