u23.jpgSingle-disc rereleases and deluxe editions of U2's first three albums — War, Boy and October — just came out (read Thor's review of them here). Are you U2 fan enough to go buy them? Tell us which of the three albums is the best, or at least your favorite U2 album overall.

I only own the first two albums by U2; Boy and October. The first album has the fondest memories, since I was but one of only a few dozen patrons (at most)in a run down venue in Lubbock. President Reagan had been shot that day, and Bono noted that such a tragedy was quite common where they came from. Everyone there knew they were witnessing something special. Afterwards, the band welcomed all to the back room and chatted for what must have been an hour. Imagine that today!

MY favorite overall is the "Live at Slane Castle", which is U2 at their very best. It's only available at U2.com with a subscription to their fan club.

i know i was young and call me corny but duh--The Joshua Tree.

Achtung Baby was my favorite album of all time. I still love it. A lot of people don't remember now, but U2 were considered weirdo new wave or punk band back in ther early 80's. In fact, if it weren't for MTV they wouldn't have gotten much exposure and probably not turned out to be one of the biggest groups of all time. Anyway, back to Achtung Baby you could listen to every song on that album. It had their biggest song "One" as well as some songs like Acrobat and Ultraviolet which were alternative songs just when that genre was taking off. I love all U2 albums, but for me its Actung Baby!

Under a blood red sky.

War is my favorite of the three, although I have been a U2 fan since I heard the first notes of Boy played in a 'record' store. Favorite overall is probably the Joshua Tree.

Of the three being re-released, I'd have to say that October is my favorite, even though that's not in agreement with Christensen's review (I rarely agree with what he has to say!).

By far my favorite U2 album ever... Unforgettable Fire. It's an unbelievable snapshot which captures all four members of the band really coming in to their own. The musical textures on that album are so rich.

Achtung Baby

Of the first three, Boy is probably my favorite. I love the enthusiasm and I think the production is great. October has half-baked lyrics, but musically it is excellent. War is a very coherent album that really saw a jump in lyrical quality.

Overall, the great Achtung, Baby is my favorite U2 album.

War is my favorite of the 3. My favorite song is Surrender. I really connected with this album in high school.

Posted by slush @ 11:46 AM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

i like achtung baby and unforgettable fire, but i like the live ep version of 'unforgettable fire' and 'bad' best. as for bootlegs 'rock's hottest ticket' is still far and away the most thrilling.

Posted by Jo @ 11:51 AM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

I had Boy and liked it, but War took them over the top. There wasn't a song on there I didn't like - and I saw the War tour at the Bronco Bowl - ah the good 'ol days before Bono wore shades.

Posted by Tommy @ 12:00 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Of the 3, I would say Boy is the best followed closely by War. Overall, my favorite U2 album is Achtung Baby.

Posted by NanFan @ 12:13 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Definitely Achtung Baby. I was at the ZooTV show at crappy Texas Stadium in 92. It was the most inovative show I had seen.

Posted by Unforgetable Fire @ 2:00 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Unforgetable FIre is by far the brest U2 album. Jushua Tree is Second. The last few are terrible.

Posted by superkaty @ 2:04 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

of the three mentioned - i like war the best. it may be my favorite, anyway - such a raw u2. however, my favorite song is "bad"...and wow, do i love the joshua tree and rattle and hum. dang it, i can't choose.

i was in the second grade when my older brother handed me the joshua tree album. it had just come out the day before and he told me it would change my life and the way i listen to music. and it did. u2 is the greatest band of all time!!!

Posted by BonoVoxofDallas @ 2:49 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

of the 3 released, War...the album that truly put them on the global map. Of all time, Achtung Baby. Just a masterful album that followed another masterpiece, the Joshua Tree. Two masterpieces back to back by the same band, but two completely different albums. Only a band like U2 could pull that off. And I love How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, another album I consider to be one of their best.

Posted by markschicken @ 3:33 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. I can't just have one favorite. It's like asking me to pick which one of my kids is my favorite. I love U2. They are truly my favorite band.

Posted by MeekerMan @ 3:36 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Best of the three albums; War.
Best of all U2 albums; Achtung Baby.

Posted by Johnny Z @ 3:37 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

War is my favorite of all time, with New Years Day my all time favorite song and U2 my all time favorite band. I've been a fan since I've heard that first note played on the piano and saw the video on MTV.

After I bought War, I went out and bought the first two and have since had to buy replacements, especially since the vinyls got so scratched over the years. I'll get these three remakes as well.

Posted by Steve @ 3:52 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

All of them except Joshua Tree

Posted by JD @ 5:06 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Achtung Baby - great tour as well. That album is amazing from from beginning to end.

Posted by johnny @ 5:56 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

I'm not so sure Achtung is a masterpiece. But Unforgettable and Joshua are both sensational.

Posted by Paul @ 6:30 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Achtung Baby is their masterpiece. I too was at the Zoo TV concert at Texas Stadium...still the best concert I have attended.

Joshua Tree? Overrated. I'd take 2-3 others over that one.

Posted by William @ 8:22 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Does anyone know where a copy of Live at the Hammersmith Palais played on the Westwood One Radio Network circa 1983 or 84ish can be found? The version of 11 O'Clock Tick Tock is by far and away the best ever.

Posted by Jake @ 9:22 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

POP. No question...I know, I know, but it is. I have every one of their albums and it's my favorite!

Posted by Matt @ 10:20 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Achtung Baby! is my favorite. I was blown away by the Edge's guitar work.

Posted by U2istheBEST @ 10:25 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Best album of all times by any group EVER - Joshua Tree!

'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' is probably my 2nd favorite. Too bad Vertigo was the only song from the album that really got any airplay on mainstream radio in the US... (what is wrong with the radio stations here anyway???)

Can't wait for the next NEW album!

Posted by kozmo @ 10:53 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008

Enough with the Achtung, Baby already! Seriously, it's a well produced record with weak songwriting - and the most overrated album in their catalog. The ego had overtaken the talent and it was all down hill from there. The first three lps are on par with the best post-punk releases of the day from the Psychedelic Furs, Echo & The Bunnymen & Simple Minds.

Posted by Lee @ 3:14 PM Fri, Jul 25, 2008

My personal favorite is The Unforgettable Fire, though The Joshua Tree is probably U2's overall strongest release (personal memories associated with TUF push it to my top position). Just snagged the Boy, October and War vinyl reissues. Why waste time with CDs? The 180-gram vinyl movement is tiny by comparison, but we'll see what medium stands the test of time...
