Idol Gives Back Show.JPGIt's like a bad dream filled with hair extensions, big mouths and strained neck muscles ... but you have to give them credit for the charitable effort.

Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, (stay with me now) Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, (hold on) Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood are lending their voices to a single that will benefit cancer research. That's 15, go ahead, count them. I'll wait. ... OK, that's 15 melismatic sanguhs (Where's Christina?) who will appear on the same stage at the same time live (!) on Sept. 5. You can run, but you won't be able to hide: The "Stand Up to Cancer" TV special will air at the same time on ABC, NBC and CBS.

The good news is the song was produced by Antonio "L.A." Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, who know how to make a heart-wrenching ode to anything (see Boyz II Men and TLC). I'll be watching, though. I won't be able to help myself. (I just hope there's gonna be a dress code.)

From the Associated Press:

LOS ANGELES -- What would it sound like if 15 of the hottest female singers joined voices? The answer will be revealed Sept. 2.
That's when "Just Stand Up" hits airwaves and iTunes. The song features Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood. All sales of the star-studded single will benefit cancer research.
The charity tune was conceived by Antonio "L.A." Reid, who produced it with longtime creative colleague Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds.
All 15 singers will share the stage to perform the song live on Sept. 5 during the "Stand Up to Cancer" television special, set to air simultaneously on ABC, NBC and CBS. Other stars expected to turn out for the hourlong fund- and awareness-raising program include Jennifer Aniston, Lance Armstrong, Katie Couric, Sally Field, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Forest Whitaker and Reese Witherspoon.
Founded in 2007, Stand Up to Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation that calls on entertainment-industry people and platforms to help fight cancer.

You're right; where's Christina? That's a pretty conspicuous absence. Even Pink? Well, as long as they got Mary in there. And you're right again - the stage is going to buckle under the weight of all that melisma and hair-uh.
