Melancholy pop singer Brandi Carlile is the latest up-and-comer to get a huge career boost from a TV ad: Her year-old, T Bone Burnett-produced The Story was pretty much ignored (except by critics) until the title track popped up in a General Motors ad that's been running during the Olympics. The result? The album just vaulted into the Top 10 of best-selling albums on Amazon and iTunes. The GM ad promotes the car firm's so-called "green" initiative, but Ms. Carlile isn't taking any chances: She's donating profits from the ad to environmental charities. |
