gabe-garcia-melissa-lawson.jpgFor those of you keeping track of songs, here's what Melissa Lawson and Gabe Garcia sang tonight on the Nashville Star finale:

Melissa -- Rascal Flatts' "My Wish" and Sugarland's "Something More."
Gabe -- Brad Paisley's "Celebrity" and Alan Jackson's "Gone Country."
Melissa and Gabe -- A duet of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes' "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," from Dirty Dancing.
Melissa, Gabe and Shawn Mayer -- Performed "Achy Breaky Heart" with show host Billy Ray Cyrus.

And as previously mentioned, Melissa sang her new single, "What If It All Goes Right" after she was crowned the new Nashville Star.

i wouldn't have been able to pick from the last two standing.. they were both outstanding talents and i hope we see alot of both of them in the future...

i am so glad she won. i thought Gabe was good, but Melissa captured my attention from the very start. she has the kind of voice that should be making music. i hope she has a solid career for a very long time.

Melissa was awesome!!

I loved the song they sang together...they went together perfectly. I think they should record a song or two together on their CD's. I'm with you, Becky, I didn't care which one won...they were both excellent.

I personally think the Nashville Star talent pool was a little shallow this year. In past years, the contestants showed a wide variety and true artistic talent. I think the trip to mainstream broadcasting via NBC took it's toll on the program. I think Melissa had the best vocal ability on the show, but never once reached out and grabbed me with her performances. Gabe Garcia is talented, but no more so than many singers you might see in a good local bar. I waited each week for him to infuse a little Tejano into his music to add some flavor to otherwise bland performances.

I was disappointed this season. Yes, Melissa was the best but I feel she was a big fish in a small pond. Will she succeed where other Nashville Star winners have failed? I hope so. For Nashville Star discovers incredible talents (Chris Young is by far one of the freshest, most distinct voices in new Nashville) but fails to promote them in a way that encourages success. Unlike it's glossy cousin, American Idol, Nashville Star seems to be all about the show and very little about selling records afterward. Perhaps NBC will throw a little of the money earned from the show on record and concert promotion. They have failed in the past and I don't see that Melissa will survive the competitive country music arena without it.

Good luck to her though. And Nashville Star...where are your past incredibly talented winners, Brad Cotter and Chris Young?

Gabe will have the most lasting career.

Congrats to Melissa, can't wait to buy the first of many of her CD's. Gabe and Shawns's too.

I feel Melissa did have the best voice on the show but I really liked Gabe. It would have been hard for me to pick between the two.
I do agree with "never missed an episode in Texas" about Nashville Star not helping their winners. I was amazed that Chris Young is not all over the radio. I request his music all the time and they don't have it to play and I live in a big city (San Diego, Ca). Chris Young is the best one they have had win, but it is interesting the most successful contestant is one who did it on her own...Miranda Lambert..you go girl..you Texans have all the winners!!!

I thought she was the best all along so she absolutely deserved to win. I went to college with Coffey so let me admit I did cheer for him until he went out last week. But all in all Melissa was true country and the all around best for Nashville. Way to go, Melissa! Arlington is proud of you!!!

Congrats Melissa!! She (and Gabe) are both great!! I also think Ashley Hewitt, Charlie Jenkins (unfairly voted off by the jealous judges), and Pearl Heart were fantastic!! Actually, all of the performers were very talented. They all are winners!!

I picked Gabe and Melissa from the vey begining. I think they are both good. I am glad that Melissa won, can't wait to hear more from them.

My thoughts were Melissa the whole time.. I think she outsang the rest and proved herself after falling to the bottom several times.. She has the vocals, and the personality to succeed. Shawn was good, but came on strong a little to late. Congrats to Melissa . Im glad she won !!

I thought Melissa was the winner the whole time, she caught my attention on her first song, and each week she proved herself.. Shawn was good, but a little to late.. Congrats Melissa :)

Melissa is very deserving of this title. She will make Texas very proud!

It’s a shame to think how much talent is being missed because of size or gender. You go girl!

Posted by cindy @ 9:31 AM Tue, Aug 05, 2008

Well I have to say they were both great in my book and I would not be the to have to choose.
If so, Melissa would have won because of number one her voice is terrific I can see myself buying her cd, and second she proves to american that no matter your size its what is on the inside. She is beautiful, and I adore her because lets face it she has had 5 boy's..Her husband seems to support her. You know it kinda reminds me of the Loretta Lynn story. Her and Dewey set out to make her a star while her mama kept the 5 kids...So with that said, I love you Melissa and you give it your all...

Melissa is by far the BEST. She also has the prettiest face I've ever laid eyes on in ANY music business and I hope she never gets too thin or pencil thin or even a little thin. Just be healthy! She is very beautiful. This is coming from an average size (12), 48 yr-old woman. Go Melissa!! I will buy your CDs and I'm not even a country-music fan.

It was impossible to pick the best this season but I think voters got it right. Go Girl. Gabe was so good, I am betting we will hear more from him.

Melissa Lawson is a wonderful entertainer. Although I didn't get to see the final show, due to storms in our area, it sounds like she did wonderful. I think she is the next Wynonna Judd. I hope she records the song that she wrote, because I believe it could go #1. I think American definitely chose the correct Nashville Star

I agree...Melissa was my choice. Now, lets see what she does with it. How many of the past winners have actually gone beyond the first album? Buddy Jewel did but then fell off the face of the earth. The other winners, whose names I forget as they did not pursue their "dreams" as they said they would, have not done anything beyond their first album. I hope Melissa is a woman of her word and opens those doors for her boys!

Melissa & Gabe were great & I hope they go on to do better than most of the other winners have. Lora Joe was just the greatest, she had very good voice on her album, but the production of it left something to be desired. I couldn't believe they would do that to her. I hope she is still out there paying her dues & hits the big time in spite of all the non help she had. I also thought that this years judges gave the singers much more help & advice than the previous judges.
