UPDATE: The AP is reporting another music act telling the McCain-Palin posse to lay off using its song the Foo Fighters. The song is "My Hero," a "celebration of the common man." Read about the latest diss here. What do you think about the campaign's use of these songs? (AFP/Getty photo: Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain today at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn.) |

This is a very serious song, very powerful. It's not a political pep rally tune. Unless Sarah Palin has experienced something remotely similar to the character in Gretchen Peters' composition, her use of it to help her vice presidential campaign is grossly inappropriate.

Boo hoo. If the venue owns ASCAP and/or BMI licenses for public performance of recorded music (which they most certainly would), then the song can be played. If Ms. Peters doesn't like it, she can withdraw her membership in these licensing organizations. Her songs won't get played any more, but then the royalty checks won't come any more either.

Gretchen Peters and the nags at NOW think that a woman who grew up in small town America, worked her way up in politics from PTA to Mayor to Governor to candidate for VPOTUS while raising 5 children is setting back women's rights?!?!?! WTF? Get a grip, girls. Is the right to be an irresponsible slut really that important?
How many of you "ladies" are aware that the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, was a proponent of genocide? Her goal was to abort as many black babies as possible to reduce the black population in America. Great cause to support, eh?

These two idiots really need to leave people's songs alone. Come on now, can you really be that corny? That's as stupid as Palin thinking Heart's "Barricuda" describes her! Get a life. LOL

Get over it

WHO CARES! They didn't like Bill Clinton using "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow." Music becomes part of the public domain when you make money by writing and or performing it. Why is this the opening page on Guidlive???

Typical Republican tactic - just grab what you want and the hell with anyone else's rights.

wow...why not follow it up with Goodbye Earl?

Hey Bets, the Eagles called and they want you to stop saying "Get Over It"...
BTW, DFW Musician is correct - songwriters don't always get to pick and choose when they're songs get played. That's part of the licensing deal. Get over i... oops.

Songs, books, movies and other forms of entertainment can be emjoyed apart from the politics of their makers. I'm not going to stop listening to Tom Petty because I disagree with his politics. What of Van Halen? Eddie is a Democrat, Sammy Hagar a Republican.
"My City Was Gone" is fantastic theme music for Rush, and "Independence Day" is great for for Sean Hannity and Gov. Palin. That's right Ms. Peters - Sean has been using Independence Day for years on his radio show, and Martina McBride is a big supporter of Hannity.

So tired of "artists" complaining when Repubicans use their material. My suggestion is that Millions of Republicans simply stop buying their stuff. Tit for tat.

I think the Ms. Peters action of donating her profits from the song to Planned Parenthood in Gov. Palin's name is a perfect response.

If they have the legal right to play these songs, then the artists need to get a grip, if they don't then sue them. That's the only question.

i absolutely concur. bands get paid money for their work. bands get paid when their song is used for a burger, target or cadillac commercial. they sell out to these products (so to speak) and 9 times out of 10 the song FITS the product/service. if a candidate is going to use someone's song, they best get permission and pay for it. just like any company or organization 'selling' their wares. AND whether people think it or not, they will remember that song associated with that candidate for a long time. to this day i think of the eckerd drug stores when i hear the song 'time won't let me' by the outsiders... and to ring true to this discussion... remember bill clinton's use of 'don't stop' by fleetwood mac!?? i always think of him when i hear that song.

Good for Grechen Peters! The fact that Sean Hannity uses that song has bothered me for years
