Grammy thoughts: Jonas Brothers vie for best new artist? Now?

MUSIC-AMERICAN.JPGThis isn't a judgment call, folks. All you Jonas Brothers fans don't wish me bodily harm. I think the JoBros make catchy, fun power pop. They're OK with me. But I can't get passed the trio's Grammy nomination in the best new artist category. It just seems so...late. Never mind that they are on their third CD, A Little Bit Longer, which was released Aug. 12. But also, their breakthrough disc, Jonas Brothers, was released Aug. 7, 2007. That means the guys are no longer eligible for that award. Jonas Brothers was successful from the get-go, debuting at No. 5 immediately. The correct year for them to vie for this honor was 12 months ago. This makes no sense. Yet another screw-up in Grammy's most incomprehensible category.

I don't wish you bodily harm, I just think you might need to check the requirements for the Best New Artist...
"Best New Artist
(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)"
Their true public identity came this year. Just FYI.. they weren't successful from the get-go. They actually were dropped from their first label. No bodily harm wishes, just you might get your facts straight first.

My facts are more than correct. Jonas Brothers, the self-titled second CD by the trio of siblings, was successful upon release, entering the charts at No. 5 back in Aug. 2007. It was immediately a hit. So I stand by what I wrote. They are no longer eligible for that award. They should have been nominated last year for the best new artist trophy that was handed out in February of this year.

Well I had never heard of them until this year and if I could have those brain cells back......

It's based on their coming to prominence in the public mind. They are household names now. Not so even in fall of 2007. They had tons of fans in 2007, enough to sell albums well, but 2008 was their soaring year, when they got off the Hannah Montana promo bandwagon and took off on their own and no one could really ignore it.

No offense, I think the Academy probably considered all of this pretty well. LOL.
