Marvin Gaye would have been 70 today ...

Today would have been Marvin Gaye's 70th birthday. Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of his death.

NGL_05GAYE.JPGMarvin began his career wanting to be the black Frank Sinatra. But he found his niche in emotionally resonant songs and that sweet, sweet tenor, later turning to his version of protest songs. And when he protested, how sweet is was to be loved by his music. That 1971 concept album, What's Going On, featuring songs such as "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)," is still relevant today and is considered by some to be one of the greatest albums ever.

As Motown celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the legendary label also celebrates and mourns for Marvin Gaye, tragically killed by his own father a day before his 45th birthday in 1984. I remember that day, all of my elders walking around in a daze, actively saying "What's Going On," subconsciously repeating Marvin's lyrics.

To remember, Motown released a special digital-only album, Marvin Gaye: Then & Now, on March 31. They're also releasing a vinyl-only re-release of United, his duets album with Tammi Terrell (another one gone too soon), on April 14.
