Today would have been Marvin Gaye's 70th birthday. Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of his death.
As Motown celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the legendary label also celebrates and mourns for Marvin Gaye, tragically killed by his own father a day before his 45th birthday in 1984. I remember that day, all of my elders walking around in a daze, actively saying "What's Going On," subconsciously repeating Marvin's lyrics. To remember, Motown released a special digital-only album, Marvin Gaye: Then & Now, on March 31. They're also releasing a vinyl-only re-release of United, his duets album with Tammi Terrell (another one gone too soon), on April 14. (Photo by Jim Britt) |
